Welcome to the Challenge
This challenge is specially curated for and who are ready to start exploring suspension, in other words, those who have already been learning suspendable harnesses, practicing tying uplines with inanimate objects, and practicing clear communication in floorwork and partials. From safety to skills and drills, it will help you do the groundwork to get your shibari practice airborne. We curated it for you to return to and learn from slowly and gradually. Make time to learn the information but also to develop habits around practicing rope regularly. If the harnesses are unfamiliar, drill them and lab them till they go on with great tension and flow. If uplines aren’t in your muscle memory, don’t move on until you feel more confident. The final video is there for you when you both feel excited, not nervous, about the challenge.
Before you begin
Safety
You need some upline management and harness-building experience for this one. Don’t work through the whole sequence until you’ve labbed each harness (bottom and top) and can tie each harness from memory without referencing the videos. Please take these considerations in mind before attempting the final class. We strongly recommend you do your first suspensions with the supervision of a trusted instructor. You can find a local studio in our Studio Directory. If attempting this at home, have a spotter or second person available to assist in the instance that you need to come down quickly. Gorgone uses a combination of lock-off techniques. There are many right ways to finish an upline, and it’s not necessary that you recreate exactly what is shown in the video, though we strongly recommend using the double U-lock where indicated. If this is your first time working through this course, avoid joining your uplines as you see in the video. That technique should only be added after you feel confident in your ability to sustain this position for some time, as joining lines increases the amount of time needed to come down from suspension. If the final position is uncomfortable, consider bringing the ankle to the point as well.
